Self-Publishing Services: Compare Costs and Deliverables Before Hiring

By American Writers Club · Updated October 21, 2026

What should a self-publishing service quote include?

A useful quote lists the exact work, formats, review rounds, author responsibilities and files you will receive. Ask whether editing, cover design, formatting, upload assistance and launch preparation are included or separate. Publishing support is a service you purchase; retailer acceptance, reader demand and book sales remain outside the provider’s control.

Start with the condition of your manuscript

A completed draft is different from a publication-ready manuscript. Tell the provider which editorial stages have been completed and whether the text is still changing. Layout and cover work can become harder to coordinate if page count, title or content changes late. Share your genre, approximate word count and target reader so the proposed scope reflects your actual book rather than a generic package.

Compare production deliverables separately

Write down whether you need an eBook, paperback, hardcover or several formats. Ask which file types will be delivered and whether editable working files are included. Check how revisions are defined, who reviews proofs and what happens if a retailer requests a correction. Distribution availability is different from a promise that a store will stock the book. Ask the provider to explain exactly what its distribution language means.

Clarify accounts, rights and ongoing charges

Ask who opens and controls retailer and distributor accounts and who receives sales statements. Confirm ownership, permissions, access, payment milestones and any recurring charges in the written agreement. Keep your own copies of files you are entitled to receive. Do not send account passwords through a public enquiry form; arrange an appropriate access process after the project responsibilities are agreed.

Request a quote around your next stage

For a publishing quote, send the book’s genre, word count, editorial status, desired formats and launch window. Mention which cover or layout assets already exist. American Writers Club can use that brief to discuss production and publishing support. If you only need formatting or proofreading, request that service directly instead of assuming you need a complete package.
